Colonoscopies

Colorectal cancer is the term used to describe both colon and rectal cancers. As a leading expert in the Ogden area for colorectal conditions, Dr. Grunander is trained in the prevention and treatment of both.

Prevention is key!

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer and the #2 cause of all cancer-related deaths in the United States. The Center for Disease Control states that:

"If everyone aged 50 and older had regular colon cancer screening tests, more than one-third of deaths from this cancer could be avoided."

  • Colon cancer is preventable and treatable. When Dr. Grunander can detect colorectal cancer in its initial stages, it is treatable and potentially curable. In fact, colon cancer deaths are on the decline thanks to screening colonoscopies and fecal occult blood tests which check for blood in the stool.

  • Prevention starts with a screening colonoscopy. Almost all colorectal cancers begin as a polyp inside the colon. Dr. Grunander is trained to detect polyps quickly and remove them during a screening colonoscopy, thereby preventing them from becoming cancerous.

When do I need a colonoscopy?

The CDC recommends that most men and women receive a screening colonoscopy beginning at age 50. People with a higher risk of colorectal diseases or a family history of cancer may require a colonoscopy sooner. Receiving a routine colonoscopy every 10 years can reduce colon cancer by as much as 60%!

What if abnormalities are detected in my screening?

Rest assured! If Dr. Grunander finds polyps or abnormal tissues, you will be informed promptly and follow-up measures will be taken. Most polyps are not cancerous, but some can be precancerous. Take comfort knowing that your same surgeon who screens for problems is prepared to tackle them.
