Hereditary Cancer Screening

Every cell in the body contains genes—blueprints of genetic code for the body. The information in your genes is inherited from your parents and you can pass this information onto your kids. Gene mutations are changes in genetic code that affect our gene function and may also be passed onto our children.

Many gene mutations do not affect our health but some can increase our risk of certain diseases. BRCA1 and BRCA2 are the best-known genes that are linked to breast cancer risk. These mutations can be passed from either mom or dad, and those who carry either are at an increased risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer.

A Hereditary cancer screening at the Ogden Clinic is a simple blood screen that determines whether you carry an inherited BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation or one of 25 other known gene mutations. If you do, Dr. Grunander is prepared to help reduce your cancer risk with increased surveillance and, in some cases, surgical intervention.

Should I consider a BRCA test?

You may be at an increased risk of having a BRCA gene mutation—and a candidate for BRCA gene screening if you have:

• A personal history of breast cancer and/or ovarian cancer

• A history of breast cancer at a young age in two or more close relatives

• A relative with breast and/ or ovarian cancer

• A relative with a known BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 mutation

When it comes to taking care of yourself today and in the future, knowledge is power. Explore your family history of cancer and talk to Dr. Grunander at Ogden Clinic about a hereditary cancer screening today.
