Do you have an upcoming surgery? You may feel overwhelmed remembering everything that goes into surgery prep. Refer to Dr. Grunander’s checklist to help the process run a little smoother

Tests & Lists

Prior to surgery, you may need to be seen for general health tests or other consultations. Dr. Grunander’s staff or your primary physician may conduct blood tests, chest X-ray, or other applicable tests.

Prepare a list of all medications you currently take including dietary supplements and herbal remedies. Also, come prepared with a list of any known allergens to food, medications, or substances.

Medication Use

Dr. Grunander or her anesthesiologist may adjust your current medications prior to the day of surgery. Blood-clotting medication in particular will be given special instructions.

Diet

It’s very important to follow Dr. Grunander’s dietary instructions the day before surgery. Do not eat any solid food after midnight. You may drink clear fluids such as water, clear apple juice, and coffee or tea without milk up to two hours prior to your scheduled surgery time.

Note: Depending on the type of procedure you’re having, diet instructions may differ. Colonoscopy prep, for example, will have a different set of dietary guidelines.

Clothing & Hygiene

Bathe or shower the night before or the morning of surgery. You’ll be required to remove your eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, and/or dentures during surgery so please bring storage for these items if you wish to bring them. Dress comfortably in loose-fitting clothing on surgery day.

On the day of your office visit, please bring:

  • Your insurance card

  • Previous test results and any reports about your condition/operation

  • A list of the medications you are taking

  • Information about the doctor who referred you, including name, office address, telephone number, and fax number

Providing the information above will help Dr. Grunander become familiar with your case and will help us keep in touch with your physician regarding your surgery.
